They are relatively simple devices, composed of a shaft and with a head (in one of a number of specific styles—see below) at one end. Like all steel fasteners, steel rivets provide a good combination of strength and durability, and are a more economical choice than those manufactured from most other metals or alloys.
Solid rivets are inserted into punched or predrilled holes and are used in structural applications. They are extremely strong, permanent fasteners that join different workpieces together such as aircraft panels. Flathead types have flat surfaces that taper toward the screw body to allow for countersinking. The flathead lies flush against the workpiece.
